Discover, Imagine and Create is an original summer program
designed to meet the needs of intellectually and creatively
gifted youngsters who will be entering kindergarten in the fall.
This course will encourage the development of pre-school
creative thinking skills through stimulating experiences with
language, math and science concepts as well as drawing,
painting and imaginative play. Children's literature, creative
drama and the world of science and mathematics will come
alive through a thematic approach.

Morning Workshops
1. Astronomy Delight!

The extremely popular and nationally recognized Astronomy Delight! is an extraordinary class designed
to inspire children and develop a true love of learning. Through story and legend, NASA and
Hubble space telescope slides of the moon, planets, stars and galaxies, students learn about spaceflight,
astronauts, new discoveries, and even cosmology while viewing the sun, planets and celestial
wonders of the daylight universe through large professional telescopes. Meet "ROAI" the alien and
"Katie the Comet with no tail" while learning about the effect of light pollution on animals and nature,
black holes, and even alien life forms! Student role-play, fun hands-on experiments, props,
graduation certificates and awards all serve to increase the student's self-esteem and sense of wonder
about the world around them!

Come fly away with us to create and learn about things that soar through the air! In this all inclusive
hands-on aviation class for beginners, students will learn about famous aviators such as theWright
Brothers and Amelia Earhart. They will explore the origins of objects that fly: kites, frisbees,
boomerangs, helicopters and even spaceships. Guest speaker captains will explain the thrill of piloting
an aircraft and just what it feels like to fly in the sky. Students will build flying projects which
range from kites toWWII gliders. These daily explorations will prepare them for their culminating
activities which include a model rocket, two model airplanes and a model helicopter. Come join our
flight crew as the sky is the limit!
3. The Artist's Palette

An art palette is full of life! Red roars, blue whispers, and yellow yells about the possibilities and
appreciation of color you can achieve. You will be creating rainbows, jungles, landscapes and still
life with your new understanding of color theory as a means of self expression. Our art projects will
include various mediums such as paint, crayons, colored pencils, cut paper and pastels. We will look
at the works of great artists like Picasso, Pollack, Van Gogh and Monet, and explore how their
unique ways of using color have made their works special. There will be an exhibition to showcase
the children's art. Remember Da Vinci produced his first masterpiece at age 18…so
you will have a head start!
4. Awesome, Magical & Edible Experiments

Let's experiment together in our modern science lab! We will discover what makes popcorn pop,
soda fizz, ice cream melt and spaghetti dance. Young scientists will learn skills for problem solving,
scientific principles, creative thinking, decision making, measuring, classifying matter and hypothesis.
We will make a lemon battery, manufacture our own play-doh, extract the colors from candy,
write messages with invisible ink, create a vinegar volcano, get an egg into a bottle and more. We
will learn the how's, why's and what if's by combining kitchen chemistry, a little bit of magic and
lots of fun!
5. Dr. Goodbody

Your body is an incredible machine composed of thousands of working parts. In this class you will
explore all of the different ways your body functions and keeps you alive. You will learn about life
science: bones (an adult has 206 bones) muscles, nervous and circulatory systems and more. See
who has the best working nose with a smelling contest. Make your own model of edible internal organs.
Watch your pulse and make a stethoscope to hear your own heartbeat.Why do you get dizzy
when you spin around? Learn why and how your bones keep you standing. You will also take an exciting
tour of an ambulance (complete with EKG machine, Defibrillator, stretchers, blood pressure
and bandaging) as part as our emergency medical experience.
6. Fiesta de Musica

Quieres Hablar Español? Would you like to learn Spanish? Come travel south of the border and
enter a fiesta of language and music as we learn songs from Spanish speaking countries. Students
will discover the joy of language through song and dance with instruction in music theory while
learning how to play the recorder and keyboard. Our class will culminate in a festival of song, dance
and instrumental performance.

7. I Want My Mummy

Travel back in time to the land of the Pharaohs and explore the wondrous pyramids and miraculous
mummies. Learn about the life of the Egyptians of thousands of years ago filled with unbelievable
riches and golden jewels. Create fascinating artifacts from this ancient civilization such as paper
plaster carvings, maps, pyramid models, mummy cases, jewelry and paper maché mummies. You
will write in hieroglyphics and recreate it on papyrus that you will craft. Come join us in an artistic
world of mystery, wonder and intrigue.
8. Books of Thunder
Session 2 Instructor: Wendy Popp

Do you have a story to tell but lack the words to begin? Let's explore what might be the color of
your laughter, let's laugh together and see. We will learn how to begin a creative process in storytelling
that may enhance the way you see the world around you. As we create through various drawing
and painting exercises, we will explore the art of storytelling and compose our thoughts in book
form. We will also learn how to think critically and about the art we make and the message it relates.
We will examine current published picture books, editorial art and graphic novels. Workshops are
designed to emphasize global community, humanitarian and multicultural ideas. In three weeks we
will make four books; a pop up, an accordion, a continuous sketch book and one final class book that
will be self published.

9. Written in the Wind

You are a wonderful story that needs telling! We will explore the art of storytelling through words
and images, through the making of books and inventive pop-up sequences, through improvisation
and observation! Join award winning artist, professional book illustrator and assistant professor
Wendy Popp in a course designed to nurture your most creative voice. We will use many mediums
and methods to execute our thoughts on paper in our wonderful NEWart facility which includes a
beautiful printmaking press just waiting for an expressive monoprint.

10. The Illusionist

your friends and be the life of the party. The delightful art of balloon sculpture will also be taught.

11. Checkmate 1

An introduction to the exciting world of chess. Chess enables children to
develop and enhance their skills in discipline, concentration and patience.
Students will learn basic opening, middlegame, and endgame strategies and how to
achieve a proper coordination of pieces. Chess notation will be taught in order
to review games. Instruction will establish an appropriate balance between
lecture, discussion and structured play. As a special learning opportunity the
Russian language will be introduced as it relates to chess play. Remember, chess
makes you smart!
12. LEGOLand
Session 1 and 2 Instructor: John Fitzsimmons

Use Legos as the inspiration to construct, investigate and communicate like
young Einsteins. Students will use models to predict, observe, measure and
collect data, experiencing forces, motion, energy, mechanisms and magnetism
first hand. They will develop complex problem solving skills and understand the
interaction between forces and motion, measurement, energy, speed (velocity) and
weight (mass). Science, technology and mathematical Lego models of a Land Yacht,
Flywheeler, Windmill, Click-Clock, Magno-Bird and others will serve as the
medium for this scientific experimentation. The basics of pneumatics will be
introduced this summer. Students will explore power systems and components,
sequence and control, pressure, prototyping, kinetic and potential energy.
Special elements will include pumps, cylinders, valves, an air tank, tubes and a
manometer. Campers must be able read and follow written directions to register

Do you want to know how things work? Do you ask the question "why" often? Do you dream of tomorrow?
Then come and enjoy "Lego's Simple and Motorized Mechanisms". This course is designed
to give campers an understanding of machines, mechanisms, structures, and mechanical
advantage. You will explore the world of technology by studying and building projects that use renewable
and alternative energy sources such as wind, solar power, water and your own body. You
will investigate energy supply, transfer, accumulation, conversion and consumption through handson
activities and exciting real life models. You are the engineer, you design, you build, you turn
your dreams into reality.

14. "Aladdin" New!

Soar away on a magic carpet ride with Disney's "Aladdin." Here is your chance to perform in one of
the most popular tales ever told! Aladdin is a common street urchin in the enchanting city of
Agrabah when he meets Jasmine in the marketplace. The two fall in love but Jasmine can only
marry a prince. Aladdin's whole life changes with one rub of a magic lamp when Genie appears!
He soon realizes only by being true to himself can he defeat the evil Jafar, his parrot Iago and win
the heart of Jasmine. We will sing and dance our way through this junior version with the musical
numbers "Friend Like Me," "Prince Ali," and of course "AWhole NewWorld." This is a comedy
and adventure not to be missed! Lead roles will require several half hour recess rehearsals. The students
will create and produce the show for performance at the conclusion of the first session
for parents and campers.

15. "The Twits" New!

Join the circus-like spectacle and become part of the cast that will act and perform "The Twits"
based on the book by Roald Dahl. It is the story of the Twits, a very smelly, nasty and unpleasant
couple whose thoughts have made them ugly. They enjoy playing tricks on each other like feeding
Mr. Twit worms instead of spaghetti and training monkeys to stand upside down. This is a story full
of grotesque fun, slapstick comedy, spectacle and much audience participation. Help our campers
try to teach the Twits how to think good thoughts!

16. Agrabah Comedy Club New!

Have you dreamed of doing stand-up situational comedy like Adam Sandler or hosting a funny show
like Billy Crystal and Ellen Degeneres? In this class you will learn the art of joke telling, components
of a funny stand up routine and techniques needed to create an entertaining sketch comedy
skit. We will create original side splitting routines to be performed as the "Agrabah Comedy Crew"
hosting "Aladdin", the 33rd annual Challenge Camp musical.
17. "Twit-tastic Live" New!

If you are funny, clever and witty, this improvisational and situational comedy class is for you! In
this class you will learn the art of joke telling, funny improv techniques and the hilarity of gross-out
comedy! We will create our own skits and vamp the camp as stand up comics, providing a lively introduction
and comic relief for our second session play, "The Twits."
18. Math Busters

Math Busters is an engaging and exciting hands-on curriculum that allows children to build math
skills through brain teasers, riddles, logic games, puzzles, Suduko, tangrams, rubrics and Fantasy
Baseball. Campers will be challenged to utilize critical thinking to ‘crack' brain teasers by leveraging
technology resources, group problem solving and individual creativity. Smartboards will provide
campers with new ways to visualize problems and access creative and interesting material online.
Campers will also enjoy applying their math proficiency to the real world through a game of Fantasy
Baseball. This game provides an opportunity to ‘sharpen our pencils' and our math ability during the
summer. The children draft their baseball players and track their game results using the MLB box
scores that appear daily. "Math Busters" is the ultimate numbers challenge!
19. Fortune Cookie

Travel to the Far East and into the fascinating country of China. This course is designed to immerse
campers into the ancient culture dating back 3600 years. Students will learn the fine art of eggshell,
brush and mask painting. Basic conversational Mandarin and music from Chinese operas will be
taught. Painting and playing your very own Chinese bamboo flute called a Dizi will complete this
journey to a land 6837 miles away and populated with over 1.3 billion people. Open your Fortune
Cookie to the world of China.

to our modern day computer based programs such as "WhoWants to be a Millionaire," game shows
continue to mesmerize countless audiences. This class will allow you to become a game show contestant
and play the role of host on shows like Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Minute toWin it and
more! You will learn all about the selected categories and have the chance to stump your classmates
by writing some of your own questions. Join us for this fun, fast-paced experience that will test your
knowledge of academic subjects, pop culture and even current events!

Welcome to the exciting world of aeromodeling. The milestones of aviation will be highlighted from
theWright Brothers to modern day drones. You will learn about the science of flight and how planes
actually take off, soar through the atmosphere and land. As a junior aviator you will discover how
pilots file a flight plan, communicate with the tower and plan an approach. Learn how to assemble,
fly and repair your own remote control airplane with hands-on flight training. Each Junior Pilot will
receive his/her own airplane and radio supplies.

This exciting new class will teach the fundamentals of basic digital photography to capture images
throughout the camp setting. Whether you own your own point and shoot or top-of-the-line digital
SLR camera, Liz will teach you all you need to know in developing your photographic eye. Class
time will be spent learning technique, shooting pictures and working in Photoshop to design photographic
layouts. The class will design and produce a published "Challenge Camp Photo Journal" and
each camper will receive a personal digital portfolio featuring their best work.

In this photography class students will engage their inner artists as they create High Dynamic Range
Photgraphy (HDR) imagery. They will learn about composition, tonal range, and the special method
of image capture needed in order to create HDR pictures. They will find these techniques useful
with regular photography as well. In the lab they will learn Adobe Lightroom 4, Photomatrix, and
some Adobe Photoshop CS6. After your fine art photographers complete their edits, they will put
their images into a photobook. At the conclusion of the session they will take home a copy of the
photobook and a USB thumb drive with all their images on it. Each camper must bring a digital
camera.

Adventures in the Lab will stimulate and encourage a love of science! Campers will spend class
time working on experiments and activities in the life sciences as well as biochemistry, physics and
earth sciences. Microscopy will play a major role in this class with emphasis on environmental science.
With the aid of micro and dissecting scopes campers will study macroinvertebrates, collect
and identify rocks and minerals and determine acidity and alkalinity in soil. Campers will learn how
to monitor air and water quality, experimenting with water bourne protozoans like amoeba, paramecia
and euglena. Data collection will enhance laboratory technique in this illuminating lab class.Supply Fee: $30.00

Learning the basics about nutrition can help everyone to make better food choices and eating smartly
can be both healthy and delicious! We will be learning the fundamentals of nutrition, moderation
and balance in your meals by creating and preparing menus and fabulous dishes based on the national
"My Plate" guidelines. We will learn how to make healthier versions of favorites like
spaghetti and meatballs, Caesar salad, macaroni and cheese and chocolate chip cookies! Campers
will develop their own custom cookbook of menus and recipes to share with their families.

here's your chance! Entrepreneurs in training will be challenged from concept generation
of a product or service to marketing and advertising. Drawing inspiration from current philanthropic
companies like TOMS shoes, Newman's Own, Ben & Jerry's & Yoplait, your company will donate
all profits to a worthy charity that benefits children. Last year's class donated $2,618 with our Challenge
Cares Carnival and Silent Auction to Seeds of Peace.

Create your own three-dimensional artwork a la Charles Fazzino! After being introduced to magnificent
Mayan, European and Asian architectural styles, you will design an imaginary city and using
this fascinating technique, will create a cityscape that will literally POP off the page! This program
integrates an appreciation of architecture with learning how to design, plan and produce 3-D art.
28. Urban Design

In this artistic and architectural journey you will be exploring the design and creation of different architectural
styles. We will begin with concepts of ratio and proportion and end with a scale model
built according to each students own specifications. You will discover the uniqueness of old and
new design techniques as you construct your own scale model buildings, bridges, skyscrapers, malls
or homes. Materials will consist of foam board, wood, wire, color and special effects... even people,
trees and cars. The design and construction of a model is a flexible open minded project which utilizes
brainstorming, provides opportunities for divergent thinking as well as develops sensitivity to
our environment.
29. Cirque De Sculpture

This unique circus inspired wire sculpture class will allow you to create lions, tigers, horses, clowns,
acrobats, high wire acts or any circus performers you can imagine. Your creations will be reflected
in the works of Calder, Giacometti, Picasso & Rodin. With soft and flexible aluminum wire and colored
tapes, you will bring your modern line drawings to life in a three dimensional circus. You will
experiment with context, outline, contour twisting and crimping of wire enhancing your artistic ability
and vision while learning alteration of form, shape, angles, relationship of lines and movement.
Projects will be mounted on wood that you will sand, stain and varnish. Catch hold of the wire and
create your own man on the flying trapeze!
30. Jammin' Drums

For beginners to intermediate players this is a totally hands-on and unique approach to studying
rhythm in many forms. Your teacher is a professional musician versed in all styles of music from
classical to rock. Jammin' Jim will play electric guitar to jam with you while you play the drum set
on some of your favorite songs. We will discuss the history of percussion and look at rhythms from
around the world. There will be lessons on hand drums, drum circle, real rock band, creating your
own percussion instruments and playing a drum set! Play instruments that we will provide like congas,
shakers, cow bells, tambourines and more. Finally, we will record a CD of an original percussion
piece the class will write together and each student will receive a copy. Don't miss this chance
to learn and play with a real rock/jazz musician!

What do Taylor Swift, Justin Beiber and The Rolling Stones all have in common? They make music
in a recording studio. With modern technology, you and your classmates can write and record your
own CD's or MP3's from the Challenge Camp music room. You will learn the secrets of the music
industry…that you can write, record, produce and distribute your own music from your home with
GarageBand. We will record songs, make a CD and upload your music to YouTube. No musical experience
is necessary however, students are encouraged to bring their own instruments and abilities
to class. We will use our combined musical and creative talents to record popular and original songs
that we will compose together! Whether you want to be the next Jimmy Page, JackWhite or Lady
Gaga, this class is awesome! Musicians will learn to record and produce their own CD as a final
project.
32. Satellite Radio New!

Tune in to the coolest radio station riding the airwaves. Campers will create their own radio show
featuring talk radio, interviews, sports broadcasts and spinning tunes. Musicians will perform "live
in our studio".We will explore the history of radio from the great shows of old to current Satellite
radio technology. You will learn creative secrets of audio effects and the business of radio. The
Campers will write, produce and record original broadcasts as well as podcasts. The Satellite Radio
broadcast crew will even create commercials. This class is hands-on, interactive, fun and educational.
Camp Broadcasters will learn to record and produce their own CD as a final project.
32. Legal Eagles

Do you want to know what happens inside of a real courtroom? Who are the people involved and
what are their duties? Do you think you would make a great lawyer…or even a Judge? What do
witnesses and jurors have to do? In this action-packed course you will learn courtroom trial procedures
and portray the defendants, lawyers, judges and witnesses in our dramatic courtroom simulations.

The racing Mini Cooper is a classic car of 1960's motor racing and now it can be yours to assemble
and drive! This 1/10th scale iconic Tamiya car comes with a clear body for you to design and create!
This beautifully shaped compact car body also comes with M-05 chassis with three adjustable wheel
bases. The servo, receiver and ESC are mounted on the rear of the frame for excellent weight distribution
and a low center of gravity for great turns. The four wheel double wishbone suspension setup

Bring the fascinating world of robots and electronics alive. Students with no previous experience
necessary will solder and assemble mechanical and electronic parts to complete their own soundactivated
"Scooter" robot. Activities will include numerous additional aspects of this exciting technology.
Students will keep their assembled robot and the tools used during the class.

36. Robots Alive 2

Bring the fascinating world of robot and electronics alive. The students in this class will learn about
the tools and electrical components used in modern electronic devices. Then they will perform more
intricate soldering and assembly of mechanical and electronic parts to complete their own "Scrambler"
Robot. This advanced robot uses a state of the art infrared beam that sees objects and alerts the
robot to alter its course to avoid the object. Advanced assembly techniques will be taught and the
students will keep their tool kit, assembled robot, and the tools developed during the class.

37. Adventures in the Lab 2

Adventures in the Lab 2 will be an introduction in the development of the fields of microbiology and
genetics. Students will help in the search for many of the local microbes and macroinvertebatebrates
found in our watersheds. Amoeba, paramecia and hydra will be explored in detail. Using smartboard
technology and binocular microscopy students will develop photos of their discoveries. By studying
the life cycle of Drosphila metanogaster (fruit flies) the class will examine and prove the laws of
heredity. This scientific discovery class will model advanced high school level courses.
